Andreas Rudolf Harlacher Award

Andreas Rudolf Harlacher (1842-1890)

Andreas Rudolf Harlacher was born in Schöfflisdorf, Switzerland on September 21st 1842. He studied Zurich Polytechnic University (ETH) and later worked there as an assistant of Karl Culmann. He also was the first president of GEP – alumni of ETH. In 1869 Harlacher moved to Prague Polytechnic School as a regular professor of civil engineering (later also as a rector). Harlacher was interested in hydrometry, he realized a series of measurements of Elbe River at Děčín and proposed the enhancement of current meter (he added the electric registration unit and developed an integrating method of measurement). His improved current meter was awarded at Paris Expo in 1878 and was manufactured by Ott Company.

Harlacher became a first head of Hydrometric section of Hydrographic Commission of the Czech Kingdom that was established in 1875. Under his leadership the Commission's activities included set up of regular water stage observation network, large hydrometric works and rating curves construction, water balance and runoff volume evaluation and also definition of forecasting method for lower Elbe River.

Andreas Rudolf Harlacher died unexpectedly in Lugano on 28th October 1890 at age of 48.
